The face is a site of politics. The representation of the face is coded and laden with preconceptions, and presumptions of virtuosity, beauty, and aspiration.
The smiling pot is based on a project that aims to distill the iconography of the face with respect to the facial features of the global majority. A concept that aims to question the neutrality of the way in which we depict faces and the question vocabulary of imagery we draw upon to depict faces.
(The Smiling Pot Face)
The facial features and spiritual potency of global majority cultures inspire Smiling Pot pieces. Reducing the face to an essential iconography that is distilled from a point that knowingly avoids neutrality. Given this, pieces are designed to be potent, and embody calm and care, in essence, to be vessels for happiness and joy.
